Cybersecurity Unified Communication & Collaboration

Architecture firm

15 February 2024

  • Customer
  • Milan-based architecture firm offering 360° design and an integrated approach that combines human dimension, technology and territorial context.

  • Needs
  • At the time Techlane was engaged, the external collaborators were using their own personal devices to work on client projects, and when it was necessary to access the Studio’s data or resources, a VPN was enabled on their computers.

    This behavior created a problem in terms of cybersecurity, since opening the company network to uncontrolled devices entailed a high risk of infection, especially considering that most of the time cyber attacks occur through lateral movements.

    A further level of problems was created by the VPN technology and firewall in use: they were not performing well and were no longer adequate to the needs.

    As a result, the productivity of employees temporarily working off-site was also affected.

    The architecture firm therefore wanted to enable both external collaborators and employees working from home or on missions at construction and client sites to access company resources:

    -securely;

    -without having to implement and maintain a complex and expensive infrastructure.

  • Solution
  • To solve the problems and respond to the firm’s change request requirements, Techlane first segmented the solutions for the two user groups: employees and collaborators.

    On the employee side – and therefore trusted machines – a new generation managed firewall with innovative, faster, more efficient and secure VPN technology was installed.

    For external collaborators, an innovative, efficient, economical, and secure technology was implemented – with two-factor authentication and granular permission levels – which allows access to individual firm workstations through a web interface and the installation of agents on company computers.

    The connection takes place via a browser with SSL encryption and works very well even with low-performance connections such as those found on construction sites.

    For this reason, the tool was also made available to employees, in order to provide a dual mode of access to company resources and implement the principles of the modern workplace.
